Sunlight Is Your Home Comfort Friend!

Here in Florida, it can be easy to view the sun as the enemy. Our air conditioners work so hard to push out the heat that is created by the sun, that you wouldn’t expect us to write a blog post about how good sunlight can be. But look around you and admire all the plants growing on your property, the good feeling it gives you, and recognize the fact that you live in the Sunshine State! The sun can be a great ally in the fight for proper home comfort, and it’s important to know that when evaluating your need for air conditioning in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The trick to mastering sunlight is figuring it when it’s helpful towards your comfort and when it’s harmful. For instance, if your air conditioner is fighting against massive amounts of sunlight bleeding in through the tall windows of your home, then it’s doing more harm than good.

Mastering the Sunlight in Your Home

Before we get into stopping sunlight where there’s too much of it, we need to talk about three great benefits of sunlight in your home. After all, if you’re going to be in Florida, you might as well make the most of the sheer amount of sunlight we get before doing anything to stop it for your comfort.

  • Sunlight helps with your mood. For the vast majority of people, sunlight gives our bodies the ability to create vitamin D. This is an important thing for your mood and general happiness, so sunlight can scientifically improve your mood when you’re in it!
  • It’s good for your plants which help your indoor air quality. Plants are great for mental health and for the quality of your indoor air. Plants require sunlight in order to grow and remain healthy!
  • It reduces mold growth. Mold doesn’t grow in direct sunlight, so any additional sunlight can actually cause mold growth to cease.

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of sunlight, we need to discuss how you can stop sunlight where you don’t want it, and get it where you do!

Curtains and Blinds

Curtains and blinds are an age-old method of containing sunlight. In rooms where you have plants, or where you’d like your home to be a bit warmer, consider turning off your AC to give it a break and allow sunlight in. This can be exceptionally nice on a chilly day.

Then, when the light is too much and temperatures are way too hot, you can use curtains and blinds to curb sunlight and keep things dark and cool in your house!

Mastering Your Windows and Their Directional Sunlight

It’s important to keep in mind that the direction your windows face is important for your HVAC! Southern facing windows will get much more sunlight all day, since Florida is still in the northern hemisphere and the sun travels on the equator. East-facing windows get sunlight in the morning and west-facing windows get sunlight in the afternoon. Use this to further control how much sun gets in your house and how hot it gets.
